Weekend Inspiration: Longing for Autumn

I imagine that in other parts of the country, the cool, crisp air of autumn has arrived. Pumpkin spice everything has appeared on the shelves of Trader Joes and I keep seeing Fall Recipes! posted all over Pinterest. But it does not feel like autumn here at all. We’re in the midst of a rather intensely hot Indian Summer, and I’m filled with longing for drifts of brilliantly colored leaves, warm drinks, the comfort of soup, and the ability to wear scarves and knee high socks. I can’t even look at or think about a sweater right now.

I dug back in my photo archives to pull up this photo taken on the New York Highline taken in late October a couple years ago. I can’t wait until my world is full of soft, golden, autumnal tones like in this photo.

The First (and Rainiest Day) in London

Only a few short weeks ago, I was in London and Paris where my dear friend Neeley Drown was teaching a photography workshop along with her husband and one of my photography teachers from Foothill College. I learned so much from them and from my friends in the workshop group.

I’m still digging through and editing a load of photos from those weeks in two glorious cities. Every time I shift through each day’s worth of photographs, I remember fun little details from the trip. I can’t wait to share with you! I thought I’d just go through each day, edit a batch, and share them here.

The first day in London was quite an adventure. We headed to Notting Hill for the Carnival, one of the most popular street festivals in Europe. As we got close to the parade route, a little drizzle started up. And that little drizzle quickly turned into the kind of rain that soaked you instantly in about a minute. The deluge delayed the parade and left us trying to find whatever shelter we could find (a single bus shelter and under an overpass). The soaking rain definitely slowed down the parade, but so many in the parade made the best of dancing in the rain.

Photographing people is really new for me. I’ve never really done a lot of street photography, and I’ll admit to feeling uncomfortable taking photos of people while walking around. I feel like I’m bothering them. Carnival was the perfect place for trying to take photos of people – everyone there was an exhibitionist and definitely wanted to have their picture taken.

There were many moods to explore during carnival.

Some played it cool….

Some bore the rain stoically…

But most were in high spirits…

And enjoyed dancing in the rain.

In photography there are no shadows that cannot be illuminated.

I'm starting my new blog in the hopes of opening up a creative dialog with myself and hopefully, others. I've been wanting to do this opening up for quite a long time now, but the pull of staying quiet and "off the radar" was just too comfortable. But lately, I've been feeling as though I'm ready to dig into my photography and printmaking art a bit deeper, to make my self-expression much more personal, to reveal and discover sides of myself and my art, and hopefully to connect with the universe and anyone else who happens to be interested in the beginning of this journey.

Hello. Let's see where we end up, shall we?
